CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Children with disabilities or special needs are getting the opportunity to catch a thrill by the ocean.

Local charity Cast for Kids is hosting a free fishing event next month where kids ages 5-18 will get to experience fishing, many for the first time.

“This event helps to promote the whole lifestyle of leisure time and living and learning and playing within your local community,” said Lisa Oliver.

Children will get a free rod and reel to take home and will get the opportunity to experience fishing for themselves. But the organization is seeking volunteers who are 18 years and older to help make the event possible.

The volunteers will be needed at the North Packery Channel Jetty where they’ll be helping kids of all ages dip their toes into what could potentially become a new hobby.

“And obviously [the volunteers] will have a fishing background or that they have fished before,” said Oliver. “There are also volunteers who can assist onshore, so they can be a fishing assistant.”

Anyone who signs up to volunteer will get a free t-shirt to take home.

The deadline to register to either participate in the fishing or become a volunteer is August 3rd. The event will be held September 21 from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
