UPDATE 10:32 p.m.- 18-year-old Helena Paige-Marie Dumas from San Antonio, Texas succumbed to her injuries at Spohn Shoreline Hospital this evening, bringing the total number of people who lost their lives in the deadly crash to six.
UPDATE 7:02 p.m.- The victims of the fatal head-on collision near Mathis have been identified. 19-year-old Trent Ryan Edge from San Antonio, Texas was a passenger in the mini-van headed northbound. The victims in the sedan were all from Alice, Texas. 19-year-old Noam Caleb Ortiz, 24-year-old Ruben Gonzalez Jr, and 18-year olds Julian Reyna and Kanyon Alegra.
From the four survivors in the mini-van who were transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Emergency Room, one remains in critical condition with life threatening injuries, one is listed in stable condition with serious injuries, and the two others are listed in serious condition with major injuries but stable at this time.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The San Patricio County Sheriff's Office and Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 37 near Mathis Saturday morning.
Law enforcement officials said calls of a wrong way driver came in around 3:30 a.m., before the crash. A sedan was headed southbound in the northbound lane, when it struck a mini van headed northbound in the northbound lane.
Officials say all four people in the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene, one was ejected from the vehicle. There were five total people in the mini van, one was pronounced dead at the scene. The other four were transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi; two in critical condition, two with serious injuries.
This incident is currently under investigation.
