CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Facebook users had lots to say about a live video of Gov. Greg Abbott receiving his COVID-19 vaccine.

"It's not the real vaccine the Governor took," Facebook user Danny Lopez said.

"Yu (sic) can go ahead and get it," Facebook user Mark Anthony Lopez said. "This Texan won't!"

It's that second comment, and others like it, that have some people concerned that a large percent of the population won't get vaccinated once the shots become widely available.

But a random sampling of people at Cole Park on Tuesday indicated that the vaccine does have supporters.

"With our leaders showing us that they’re willing to take the shot, I think that’s going to promote everyone to do the same thing," park-goer Larry Young said.

Fellow park-goer, 80-year-old Tom Patterson, was even more enthusiastic.

“I’ll be first in line when it’s available," he said. “I believe in the vaccine. I believe in the science. I believe it’s going to help us all to get out of this terrible virus.”

As for local health leaders, Director of Public Health Annette Rodriguez encourages everyone to get the vaccine when it comes available.

But she stopped short of urging people to get vaccinated -- acknowledging that some people have their reservations.

"I can’t make you, and I don’t want to force you to get something and then something adverse does happen to you," she said. "You have to make that decision."

Some reports of allergic reactions to the vaccine have come from the United Kingdom where the shot has been available for two weeks now.

Still, Rodriguez is confident in the vaccine's safety.

"For me, I’m getting the vaccine,” she said.
