Parents are working to keep their kids learning and occupied through the remainder of the school year, but some area kids are lacking the supplies they need at home to continue to be successful. Now, some Alice residents are stepping in to help.
Amanda Friedeck has three kids at home who are all trying to stay active and continue learning.
“They do homework every single day,” Friedeck said.
While homeschooling and Zoom classroom settings are the new norm, Friedeck said she’s having to make trips to the store to buy school supplies one more time before school lets out.
“We had to go buy new printer ink, and we’re already going through our supplies that we have at home,” she said.
That inspired a partnership between the Boys and Girls Club of Alice and Friedeck, whose family owns the SilverStar Food Store in Alice.
Together, they are working to raise $1,000. They plan to buy 120 school supply kits for kids who don’t have enough supplies at home, and whose families can’t afford to buy them in the midst of the financial crisis the novel coronavirus pandemic has created.
“These kids probably don’t have anything anymore,” Friedeck said. “We want you to succeed through this time, don’t give up”
The kits are free to any child in the community, and also members of the Boys and Girls Club of Alice. She said they will have erasers, sharpeners, highlighters, two spiral notebooks, three folders.
One version of the kits will be for early education, and the other for older students.
Friedeck said once they raise enough money, they will schedule a pick-up day when families can drive by the Boys and Girls Club in Alice and get their school-supply kits.
