An underground cable fire impacted several residences on the South Side of Corpus Christi this morning.
Crews were called out for a fire on the 5000 block of Meandering Lane, near Everhart and Middlecoff, just after 6 a.m. When they arrived, they found a small fire on a fence that spread to a nearby home, according to Captain John Carstetter with the Corpus Christi Fire Department.
Carstetter said the fire was electrical in nature and included a buried power line. Three other fires started due to the underground cable and least three homes were minimally affected. Crews had to wait for AEP to shut off power in order to fight the underground fire.
“At this time, it is still burning because we are unable to extinguish the electrical fire underneath. Electricity and water,” Carstetter said.
All fires were extinguished as of 7:20 a.m.
Power has been shut off to the area and AEP is on scene. About 30 AEP customers are without power at this time, according to the AEP outage map.
Fire crews will further investigate the incident to understand why the fire began.
